Abstract

Hemorrhage was cause of death. Hemostatic agents have been developed to stop bleeding. Chitosan was applied as wound dressing because it was biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic and antibacterial. Besides, it promoted tissue growth and possessed hemostatic properties. Although chitosan wound dressings had hemostatic properties, they were not always effective in stop bleeding. Therefore, the aim of this research was to develop chitosan wound dressings by incorporating a procoagulant (calcium chloride) for enhancing hemostatic efficiencies. Chitosan containing difference amounts of calcium chloride was fabricated and evaluated their hemostatic efficiencies as well as cellular responses. The optimal chitosan-calcium chloride formulation accelerated blood clotting. Moreover, in vitro assays demonstrated that the chitosan-calcium chloride wound dressings had a good cell compatibility. Therefore, the calcium sorption-chitosan wound dressings might be promising a good wound dressing materials.
