Abtract
Two quaternary ammonium chitins containing carboxymethyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTA) and 3-Carboxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CPA) were synthesized by coupling chitin with the quaternary ammoniums (CTA and CPA) using dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCC) as a coupling agent in dimethylacetamide/5%lithium chloride solution. FTIR spectroscopy analysis showed the forming of ester linkage from quaternary ammonium chitin derivatives. Antibacterial activity of the quaternary ammonium chitin derivatives were evaluated against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) by investigating the reduction percentage. All the quaternary ammonium chitin derivatives showed better antibacterial property than chitin. The derivatives were effective to E. coli than S. aureus and CTCPA could inhibit the growth of S. aureus better than CTCTA.
