Antioxidant from Extracted Clove Powder for Polybutylene succinate

Abstract


In this study, the clove powder was extracted from clove bud using water and spray dry technique. The extracted clove powder (ECP) was characterized by high performance liquid chromatography indicating eugenol as a major component in the extracted clove powder. DPPH radical scavenging assay was also applied to examine antioxidant value of the extracted clove powder. Subsequently, an amount of 0, 1, 2 and 3 phr extracted clove powder was added into polybutylene succinate (PBS), and mixed by twin screw extruder. The melt flow behaviour of the PBS/ECP compound was then characterized using melt flow index (MFI). The PBS/ECP film was prepared by blown film extruder. The tensile properties were investigated, and revealed that the tensile strength and elongation at break in both directions, i.e. machine direction and transverse direction, decreased with increasing extracted clove powder contents.
